Cartagena de Indias is a tourist and cultural district that is located in the department of Bolívar, on the shores of the Caribbean Sea.Since its founding in the 16th century, Cartagena was considered one of the most important ports in America during the Spanish viceregal era. Most of its artistic and cultural heritage comes from this period.For more than 250 years Cartagena was under Spanish rule, until November 11, 1811 when it became the second territory in Colombia to declare absolute independence from Spain, becoming the virtual capital of New Granada. With the great passage of time, Cartagena de Indias has preserved the historic center ‘Walled City’, and has become one of the most important ports and tourist destinations in Colombia, in the Caribbean and in the world.In 1959 the Walled City was declared a National Heritage Site of Colombia, and in 1984 UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site. In 2007, its military architecture was awarded as the fourth wonder of Colombia.
